Trauma is a word that covers many different situations and conditions. The world can’t define what is traumatic for you, only you can do that. When you sit with me to work through a traumatic experience, whether current or long past, there is no expectation of how much you should or shouldn’t share. I want to go at your speed to help you make sense of what you have been through. My primary method for working through trauma is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. EMDR was developed to help clients process through their traumatic experiences so those experiences don’t hold the same power that they once did.
We will start the process by learning and using exercises to strengthen your emotional regulation. We will then begin to process through the different traumatic experiences that you have identified. I view this part of the process as untying all of the unhelpful thoughts and emotions from the traumatic experience. Finally, we will replace those thoughts and feelings with more helpful and appropriate ones.
One of the great things about EMDR is that it isn’t necessary for you to go into great detail about your trauma. It is your body doing the healing and you will be in control of the process.
